Harmonious Triangle Mittens Designed by Janet Welsh |
This design was created as I was struggling to bring together two colours in a stranded-knitting design. While the colours appeared to have good contrast from each other, the contrast was lost in the actual knitting. After trying a few designs, a friend suggested that triangles would work well. That was all the push I needed to create an all over triangle design that brought two colours together in a pleasing manner.
This pattern is suitable for an intermediate knitter
with some experience working with charts and knitting in the round. Designer
tips are provided for those who are new to stranded colourwork. The right and
left-handed mittens are identical.
Instructions are written for a woman’s small hand with medium and large in brackets. Additional instructions are included for those who want a shorter mitten. Mittens pictured were knit with the instructions for size medium.

Little Victories Mittens Designed by Janet Welsh
|
In challenging times, it is important to look at the
small wins in life and celebrate the little victories. This pattern includes a
few challenging design elements such as managing five colours overall in the
cuff, and a scalloped edge with a Latvian braid. These elements can be modified
for simplicity, or knit the mittens as designed and celebrate the little
victories of knitting each challenging element as it comes.

Flowers Over the Fence Mittens Designed by Janet Welsh
|
These mittens came to mind as I walked through the
neighbourhood and saw beautiful flower gardens beyond picket fences. Flowers on
mittens help us to remember the beauty of spring while keeping our hands warm
in the winter.

with some experience working with charts and knitting in the round. Designer
tips are provided for those who are new to stranded colourwork.

Winter Love Mittens Designed by Janet Welsh |
As I design mittens, I often gravitate towards

Autumn Fade Mittens Designed by Janet Welsh |
In Canada, my favourite season is autumn when many trees change from lush green to brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows. Inspired by those beautiful colours, the design of these mittens brings together autumn motifs with a fade of contrast colours against a neutral main colour background.
This pattern is suitable for an intermediate knitter with some experience working with charts and knitting in the round. Designer tips are provided for those who are new to stranded colourwork. Only two colours are used in each row.

Simply Slipped Mittens Designed by Janet Welsh |
These mittens are worked using an easy to remember
sequence of knit, purl and slipped stitches, creating a design that looks more
complex than it is. This simple technique produces a mitten in three colours,
while only working with one colour per round.
The mittens can be knit with sport-weight yarn or fingering-weight yarn. The mittens can also be knit with just one or two colours for a completely different look.
This pattern is suitable for an intermediate knitter
with some experience knitting in the round. The right and left-hand mittens are
identical.

Regal Road Mittens Designed by Janet Welsh |
The name for these mittens was inspired by the continuous paths in the main motif, brought to life with a regal purple colour set against a white background. The design will look good in any combination of two contrasting colours.
Instructions are written for a woman’s small hand with medium and large in brackets. The pattern uses 72 76, 80 stitches around the wrist and the top of the hand. Alternative charts are included for those who want a shorter mitten. Mittens pictured were knit with the instructions for size medium.

Winter Surprise Mittens Designed by Janet Welsh Knits
|
Knitting and surprise packages are two of my favourite things. I’ve brought those two things together in these mittens designed for a mystery group knitalong in winter. The pattern releases motifs, one clue at a time, as a surprise to the knitter.
NOTE: This pattern was created for a mystery knitalong. When you purchase this pattern, you will see that it has been formatted as six clues, as it was originally released in six separate installments.
This pattern is suitable for an intermediate knitter with some experience working with charts and knitting in the round. Designer tips are provided for those who are new to stranded colourwork.

Sunnybrook Mittens Designed by Janet Welsh Knits |
Inspired by a favourite city park, these

Using only two colours, the design has a reverse ombre effect, shifting the colours
from dark to light.

These mittens were designed in the midst of a summer heatwave when all

Spice Trade Mittens
Designed by Janet Welsh Knits
|
These mittens are inspired by the rich colours of the spices
once used for commerce in the ancient spice trade. The motifs used are a
tribute to patterns found within Middle Eastern art.
This pattern is suitable for an intermediate knitter with some
experience working with charts and knitting in the round. Designer tips are
provided for those who are new to stranded colourwork. The right and left hand
mittens are identical with the same pattern on the top of the hand and the palm
for each mitten.
Buds of Spring Mittens
Designed by Janet Welsh Knits |
These mittens are inspired by the pops of green that sprout
when trees begin to bud, while the memory of snow is still fresh in our minds.
The lace motif of a budding tree in the cuff is echoed in the stranded pattern
on the top of the hand. Combining the delicacy of lace with the grounded
substance of stranded colourwork results in a mitten that is perfect for
wearing on a chilly spring evening.
This pattern is suitable for an intermediate knitter with some
experience working with charts and knitting in the round. The lace cuff has a
simple garter stitch border or optional Latvian braids. Designer tips are
provided for those who are new to stranded colourwork.

All The Reindeer Mittens Designed by Janet Welsh Knits |
These mittens are inspired by all of the reindeer that are famous at
Christmas. Each mitten has eight reindeer to represent the original eight, Dasher,
Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen, as well as one larger
reindeer to represent Rudolph, who saved Christmas. A few optional duplicate
stitches highlight Rudolph’s nose.

Autumn Snow Mittens
Designed by Janet Welsh Knits |
These mittens are inspired by the first snowfall of the year that often
comes in autumn, when the leaves have turned and their colours are still
brightly laying on the ground. The first dusting of snow is always a beautiful
sight as it sparkles down.
The pattern takes advantage of the subtle transitions of colour in Knit
Picks Chroma, colour-transitioning, fingering weight yarn, shown in
Vermont/Natural. This gives the mittens the effect of being knit with several
different colours of yarn, when in fact only two colours of yarn are required.
The pattern will also show off the snowflakes beautifully when knit
with two solid-colour yarns, using Knit Picks Palette in Clove Heather/White.

Celtic Inspired Mittens Designed by Janet Welsh Knits |
For years I’ve been drawn to Celtic designs. I love how the lines flow.
These mittens came to mind as I studied different Celtic patterns and
considered how they could merge with colourwork mittens.
This pattern is suitable for an intermediate knitter with some experience working with charts and knitting in the round. Designer tips are included for knitters who are new to stranded colourwork.
